Emily Mayton is a 5th generation Austinite and 5th generation Methodist. Emily told us about her family background and how she got involved in volunteer work. Before she retired, she was an art teacher and also worked with community organizations to create partnerships with schools. As she was a single mom, she no time to volunteer. But when she retired in 2001, she joined United Methodist Women so that she could start volunteering. The UMW has a hands-on mission. They have 92 different mission projects in the US and many more world-wide. UMW focuses on women, children and youth, as communities improve when you educate women and girls. Emily showed us slides of some of their volunteer activities. The UMW is involved with the Montopolis Friendship Community Center, which has been serving the community since 1956. The first bilingual kindergarten was started there. UMW has scholarships for students in that community. UMW also has had a garage sale for many years and donated the money to community projects. Emily also told us about the Refuge Ranch for victims of sex trafficking. It is a therapeutic community with long-term holistic care for all of the residents, which opened in August of 2018. Emily has also been involved in the Rehama project in Kenya that Nancy Lehman-Carssow told us about on March 10th. Pioneer Farms is another place she volunteers. It is a living history museum that has stayed open during COVID-19 due to being run by volunteers. It is open Thursdays through Sundays. Bravo to Emily for all of the projects she is involved in!!
