PDG (2019-20) Jim Henry, the District 5870 Membership chair spoke to us about membership.  He said Rotary is a membership organization that does service not a service organization.  Rotarians should seek other qualified Rotarians Invite them to be Rotarians!  He showed us a list of his team members for this Rotary year.  Each one has been assigned a different task to help the clubs, and they will be rotating publishing a monthly membership moment on the District 5870 website.  However, even though he has a team, the most important team members are us!!  District 5870 wants the clubs to tell them what they want and the district will serve the clubs.  Jim says the key to membership is to grow Rotarians!!  We should look for people who want to serve and fit our club’s culture.  We should be transparent before they join and talk about the club’s expectations.   Make new members feel welcome and engage them - give them an education, a job and a friend. Recognize all members’ contributions to the club. Re-engage existing members by having them be mentors to new members; it’s a service project within the club.  The District is focusing on retention this year; District goal is a 90% retention rate.  Jim encouraged conducting exit interviews for leaving members.  He said we should treat our club like a business with our product being community service.  Sell that product to the community.  One suggestion is to ask community members to join service projects.  Retention = growth, so have a membership plan for obtaining and retaining members!
