Mark Kapner retired from Austin Energy in 2011 and is a free-lance engineer. He spoke to us about renewal energy on May 30th. In Texas, our energy use is 46% natural gas, 27% coal but diminishing; 17% - wind and solar - which is growing; and 10 % in nuclear- two plants that reliable, economical and paid for. There are two other renewables that are small percentage - hydro electric and bio-energy. The growth has been phenomenal in wind. The technology has been developed over 40 years. Wind farms are where the wind is - west Texas and along the Gulf coast. Texas is number 1 in wind production- more than the next 4 states combined. Drawback - winds strongest at night when need is less - also stronger at certain times of year. Trying to develop energy storage systems to collect the power from wind.
