Jeff Coleman, District Governor Nominee and a member of the District's Membership Team, spoke to us about membership. Jeff began his talk by telling us that membership in District 5870 is down 82 members as of the end of the Rotary year. We need to find new members and get them engaged and involved so they stay. As an illustration of the various reasons people join Rotary, Jeff told us his story. He joined because he was lonely from working in a small office and was asked to come to Rotary meeting. He told us about one of his club’s newer members who came to an event that was listed on Facebook and wanted to give back and serve his community. Since we don’t know what might get people interested in Rotary, asking is the first step and most important. Ask your friends and neighbors to come to a meeting! Remote workers are the new target audience; they want socialization. When asking people to come join us, tell them about how Rotary makes an impact in our local community and in the world. He gave examples of our Rise Against Hunger project and the District’s Cozumel water project, which our club is also participating in. Rotary International has made a impact around the world by giving out more than $4 million to fund projects around the globe. How can we make people want to stay besides showing them the impact that Rotary makes – make sure that the club is welcoming to all! Remember you are a Rotarian!
